I don't like mondays! (Tell me why)*
Notebook journal has a report on a new Samsung laptop that just begs the question: why? The laptop sports a 19 inch screen that can be detached from the rest of the chassis. The story goes that they have made the screen detachable so that you can lift it to a more ergonomic height. That's all very cool but what I want to know is: why in the world would you want a laptp big enough to accomodate a 19 inch screen. I know I'm 'backward' in this and that bigger is supposed to be better, but in my world, a laptop's made to be portable. I've had opportunity to lug a Toshiba tecra with a 17 inch screen. Okay, compared to the first Apple protable the Toshiba is light (but then we're comparing a machine the size of a small suitcase released in the early nineties to a machine released more than a decade later). Anyway, a laptop with a 17 inch screen is too heavy to be portable so my guess is that the 19 inch monster is damn near unusable from a protability point of view. It's going to be too heavy and will have a battery life of what... 15 minutes? Without exaggeration, I think that a machine like that would need a car battery to run for longer than two hours.
The sad thing is that there will be people who'll buy it for the bragging rights. Ah well, they deserve it then. That and the hernia they'll get lugging it around.
*For those who don't get the title, I don't like mondays was a Boomtown Rats song and the Boomtown rats were 'Sir' Bob Geldoff's band back during Live Aid (I).
